True Colours

Beauty is as enchanting as it can be deceptive. Is it really in the eye of the beholder? For the most part it can certainly seem like that. It has about it an ethereal quality that feels so fleeting
that you can miss it if you blink.

Being the beholder only means you’re the official filter through which everyone else gets to
hear second-hand that you think a thing is beautiful or not. Bit of bias binding methinks! Still, it’s the way things are most of the time.

On the flip side of the coin, I find it interesting that a thing can (in the beginning seem beautiful) and depending on how closely we let ourselves get to the thing there is a possibility that once the distance between it and us has been bridged and our prejudices quieted we might indeed change our minds and see that what was previously beautiful to us could infact be ugly up close and personal. It’s happened before.

Beauty is enchanting in the way that happening upon charm in a person is delightful and intoxicating. It gives us a sense of joyfulness that we don’t expect yet are completely disarmed by
it for the shallow reason of how well we feel just from being in its presence. Odd creatures aren’t we?

Beauty never phases me but it always does surprise me. After all these years I’m not sure why. Can you hazard a guess? In the meantime, I shall continue to allow beauty’s true colours to reveal themselves, that’s always an interesting exercise.
