In Reflection

It’s my friend Frazer’s birthday today and while the age tachometer trips over another year for him I’m reminded of just how long I’ve known him and I concede it’s been a while. Today, Lynley Dodd’s Hairy McClary from Donaldson’s dairy also celebrated his birthday. It seems hard to believe that the little black dog of dubious heritage has clocked up 25 human years (that’s 175 dog years give or take some mischief) and is still as much loved today as back then when he first arrived in the ideas book of Dodd.

Frazer and me, we go back a way (like me and Hairy McClary). As friends go we have experienced the very best and the very worst of times together and yet here we are all these years later, still friends though from time to time I wonder why! Is it habit I wonder?

When a thing is a habit it’s just as easy to fall out of a good one as it is to stay in a bad one, yes? Infact the likelihood of the former is increased significantly by the years that pass indiscriminately without any fuss or bother till making excuses for not being in contact simply become irrelevant. It’s really that simple isn’t it? Is it as puzzling to you as it is to me?

So tell me this, why is it easier to fall out of the habit of knowing some and not others? I’ve often toyed, in maverick moments of blatant disregard with the idea that not giving a damn would be so much easier! Looking back over the years and in reflection I understand only this, birthdays are a time to celebrate not to commiserate! So Happy Boithday Frazer.

I think, like Dodd’s canine adventurer with his raggle taggle bunch of mates, it would be fair to say that Frazer and me have also had our fair share of adventures together. We’ve had firsts and seconds and ninth and tenth adventures and all the ones over and above that! We’ve got into scrapes and scraps and still come out watching each others backs. It seems odd in reflection. And not!
