Music Music Music

Sometimes when I listen to Rob Thomas sing 3am I often think the song really gets me. Right in that moment, it really gets me. The combination of good lyric, a memorable melody and a strong voice like Thomas’ seems to bring the intent of his lyric home. To be honest, I never try to over analyse a writer’s intent with a song but I like that somewhere in some other place our common humanity is expressed well by at least one of us!

Music is universal, we all understand that. We get told it often. We believe it often. Why? Because its mostly true depending on our world view. Music can be a great social leveller. It allows us to kneel before it and creates us equal with one carefully placed shoulder-tapping touch of its sword-like blade. I like that it doesn’t stand on ceremony.

I like that it has multiple personalities. I like that as a listener we’re not regarded as strange or odd when our musical tastes run the entire range and gamit one day and a whole other on another day. No-one thinks we ought to be locked up and the key thrown away. Having wide ranging musical tastes can be quite freeing in that respect.

I like that no-one can demand we adhere to any particular style or genre if we don’t want to. That’s why I think that music is such a great social leveller. It deems us equal whatever we choose to listen to. What are you listening to right now?
