Sub Urban Hits

Its hard to believe that we have already again nearing the end of the eighth calendar month of the year. And its not so much that time has flown by but the fact it has been jam packed with change and changes.

I find embracing change is a necessary tension within a modern life context. A necessary attitude to frame or reframe the tension rather than always be struggling against it. It’s that easy? Rarely but it is do-able. Having said that, I suffer from a sagging sense (though I’m getting better with it) of loss every time I have to subscribe to an altered state.

My particular learning style is more monkey see, monkey do than wholely theoretical. I’m ambidextrous in that regard. It suits me. Theory and practice combined.

Change has always been made out to be frightening and it can be. I was thinking the best way to suggest as a coping mechanism and felt the closest I could get to getting past those ‘watchful dragons’ is to feed them!

I can hear you from here, “are you crazy?” I concede there’s a minimal allusion to this (the crazy bit) in some of my actions which are all chronicled here in some way, shape or form. Here’s a good way to jump start the heart.

It’s the practice of ‘burbing’, that’s right, you’re not seeing things. It’s the modern day phenomenon using basic latitutde and longitudinal skills. You need a Street Directory (Navman is handy but not necessary and doesn’t always gaurantee you’ll get lost and really make a really great find!).

It’s as simple as agreeing on a page number and both latitude and longitudinal co-ordinates, getting in the car and going. A different place roughly every fortnight or so. A friend of mine and me have a preoccupation with certain pastry delicacies, so we burb with that preoccupation in mind. After your third burb session going some place you’ve never been before can literally (for us) becomes a piece of cake! Such a terrible bun! I mean … well, you know what I mean. Just playing.

This practice is one of the most non-threatening ways I know of dealing with altered states on a less frightening level. Think suburb (which is where burb was derived from) with best milkshake, antique store, golf course, the list is endless. The point is taking an altered state on by the horns. No bull.

With petrol prices soaring through the roof here in Hawke’s Bay maybe smaller trips outside your backdoor would be better but if you like adventure and you’ve learnt to curb the burb sweats, go further afield by all means. Dealing with altered states will become a more comfortable experience, try it and see.
