Flower Power

Like most people, I love a feel good story and I love it because there are some stories that should be told because they help us back to the place where we can believe in the capacity for human kindness again. It surprises me then that the media tell them so infrequently and they are (for the most part) the exceptions to the rule rather than the rule. Why is that?

Is it because ‘good’ is a bad seller? That bad is a better seller in fact? Quite possibly! I’m heartened though that the ‘feel good’ stories that slip through the cracks are like those wonderfully resilient plants that grow (astonishingly) in places where we least expect them to be growing. There’s something wonderfully “up yours” about them growing where you find them. I like that a lot about them!

No-one thinks twice about flowers growing in rich black soil, it’s to be expected. But between the cracks in a concrete jungle, well, that’s a whole other thing isn’t it? Yes it is! And the loveliest thing about that is the startlingly warm feeling you get just from seeing it grow there. I love it.
