Adopt a Kiwi as part of Wellington Zoo’s Adoption in a Box Programme. Wellington Zoo has over 500 animals, comprising over 100 species. There are big plans ahead for a new Zoo Hospital.

The Nest, Animal Hospital will be a Centre for Wildlife Care, Rehabilitation and Research. It will enable staff to showcase more of what they do, turning the Zoo inside out so that it can provide an innovative and exciting experience for its visitors. The current hospital is a converted bungalow that is cramped and too small for the needs of the Zoo and its animals. The new Hospital will provide excellent care for not only Wellington Zoo’s animals but also for the injured native wildlife from all over the Wellington region.

The Nest will be a world-class Veterinary Facility for the animals living at Wellington Zoo. The staff are well skilled and passionate but the current hospital does not meet the needs of a 21st century Zoo. The Nest will enable us to conduct specialist procedures on site in state-of-the-art facilities.

The hospital will cover approximately 600m2 at the front end of the Zoo and will cost approximately $6million to build. Community support will be vital in making this Project happen and any donations to the Nest over $100 will be acknowledged on a Sponsors’ Board at the completed Hospital. The Hospital will be built inline with sustainable building practices where possible including a rain water recovery system, solar water heating, the use of FSC timber and recycled materials where possible.”
