Here’s One for the Books
I love this time of year that we’re heading into, it’s the time of year that bookworms like me get to read to our heart’s content. I always associate the upcoming Christmas season with a cache of newly acquired books and the chance to read uninterrupted through days at a time if one felt so inclined. It’s heaven!
The best part of all is if your favourite author has written a sequel to last year’s novel there’s a good chance you’ll be picking up where you left off with old character friends in some delicate plot to save the world or them and with just the right amount of twists and turns (no angina pains on your part) to keep the blood pumping.
One of my favourite character writers was Colin Forbes 1923-2006 (real name, Raymond Harold Sawkins), to be sure not everyone liked his writing but I did. I liked his characters, Tweed, Paula Grey, Monica, Bob Newman and Marler. It was like meeting up with the old gang each summer. Action, thrills and spills, who could resist that?
Recently I read the “didn’t-have-much-else-to-do” diatribe of some bloke calling Forbes the original inventor of crap fiction. I thought, who cares what you think. Forbes as it happened lived off 4 hours sleep a night while holding down a 45 hr week day job and did another 45 hrs in the same week just so he could achieve his writing dream. Hats off to him I say! Old Mr Whingy ain’t noth’in but a squeaky door! But isn’t that the way?
For me, it’s just the right amount of fiction between breakfast and lunch. An easy read that’ll take a little over two hours to finish, increase the heart rate, save the girl, beat the baddies and make looking forward to a cup of coffee about as good as a morning can get (well almost!).
So for bookworms everywhere, we are so coming into the most relaxing time of the year for us. Can’t wait. Think of it sun, sea, sand and a great read. Oh and the occasional glass of Hawke’s Bay Red to whet the midday appetite, it’ll make page turning all the better wouldn’t you say? ABSOLUTELY!
