Voices in My Head

There’s a lot to be said for ignoring the ‘voices in your head’ and finding your own way about doing a thing. I find that all the time! Surprised? Well, neither am I! But you always knew that about me right? I have certain friends who would definitely fall off the side of life in fits of laughter about that last sentence! And as you know, I love a good belly laugh and I don’t mind laughing at myself either.

That said, it’s been a while since I walked barefooted in the rain. It rained this afternoon actually but to be honest it just didn’t cross my mind until now. Have you ever done that? Walked barefoot in the rain, not a care in the world about who may or may not see you. Really? Not lately? That’s a shame!

People walk around here barefooted all the time and that sight makes me smile. So I’m a simpleton, those small things seem so lovely. There are a number of things that still surprise me like that since my return to New Zealand from Sydney.

Recently I saw some children playing up an apple tree in the late afternoon, trying to push each other out of it while holding one-armed onto its craggy moss covered limbs for dear life. The family dog was running around the base of the tree, barking and hoping beyond hope one of them would fall out. Of course it would be there to provide comforting licks. That scene somehow made me feel warm on the inside.

I’ve always thought you’ve gotta have a go at something you’ve thought about doing but never really had the nerve to do or indeed the reckless gumption of mind to do. Truthfully, it’s liberating beyond words. I tried skateboarding once, down at one of those skatebowls in the park. It was frightening but liberating like I said. I only needed to do it once to confirm that I admired those who could and can, alot.

To watch them, young people are fearless, they just launch themselves off the lip of the bowl and skate out into thin air. It’s a long way down as I discovered. I think the first time you do it, you simply don’t have a clue and the word stupidity does feature in my thinking on the way down. Insane is another!

All this to say, if the doing something for something’s sake is skateboarding in a bowl, don’t forget, I warned you! In the meantime, I think I’ll do a little puddle-jumping, less nerve required!
