Friends of the Ross Sea Ecosystem
The Ross Sea, Antarctica is the last pristine open-ocean marine ecosystem on earth. ‘The Last Ocean Project’ has a single primary goal: to give the Ross Sea a voice. Its Supporters will pursue this goal with a variety of outreach projects including a film, a book, an online library of multi-media science, exhibits and presentations, publications and a scientific conference and in their FORSE (Friends of the Ross Sea Ecosystem).
Their efforts are meant to bring the story to life, but they feel that the real voice will come from you. If enough of us speak up, we may be able to write the next chapter in the management of this special place, as they bring our chorus of voices to bear on the political process.
They are aligned with several organisations, including SeaWeb, Pew Environmental Group, and Oikonos. They are also in the process of creating ‘The Last Ocean Charitable Trust’ in New Zealand. A group of 30 scientists determined that the Ross Sea, where most of them have worked, should not be destroyed by industrial fishing like all other high-seas marine ecosystems on Earth.
