Team AWE: Able Women Empower
Tricia Downing (paratriathlon/rowing), Ryan McLean (swimming), Hannah Pennington (skiing/paracanoe) and Carrie Willoughby (cycling) are collectively Team AWE. Conceived over a latte and some warm conversation, it was immediately evident that what these women each lacked on their own, could be found when uniting together.
ABOUT Tedx
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. The programme is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
ABOUT Team AWE
“The Able Women Empowering aim to change the face of women in athletics, promote adaptive sports, create an awareness of physical challenges, provide support for new women athletes, and everything in between.
The women: Tricia Downing, Ryan McLean, Hannah Pennington, and Carrie Willoughby have never been so excited to prove to the world the power and passion that lies within a team, this team.
The team has dedicated their efforts to improving themselves and their own sporting ventures, but more importantly, to leave an impact on audiences of willing individuals brave enough to take a look at their own challenges and desires, and make the willing decision to go for them. Being brave enough to fall really means they’re brave enough to succeed.
They have their sights set on creating recognition and support of disabilities in the community, fostering understanding of embracing diversities. They want to provide opportunities for women with disabilities to achieve athletic goals by raising money and awareness. And last but not least, they want to produce and unite a team comprised of a spectrum of sports as well as disabilities on an elite level. GO Team AWE!”
