Joe Sabia: The technology of storytelling

Joe Sabia investigates new ways to tell stories sometimes meshing viral video and new display technologies with old-fashioned narrative. He introduces us to Lothar Meggendorfer, who created a bold technology for storytelling: the pop-up book. Sabia shows how new technology has always helped us tell our own stories.

ABOUT TED

TED is a small Non Profit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment and Design.

ABOUT Joe Sabia

“Joe Sabina is so out-of-the-box that when you arrive at the frontpage of his website, surprise! There’s nothing but an empty box. Too funny! He considers himself a full time independent conceptor, creator, consultant, collaborator, and curator.

He works directly with companies, non-profits, ad agencies, and musicians and is a regular panelist in copyright/copyfight debates, as a remix culture advocate. He’s the 2007 International Pun Champion, he co-curates and co-hosts ‘Boing Boing TV’ on Virgin America with Xeni Jardin, and he was a finalist in TED’s first ever ‘FULL SPECTRUM’ auditions.

If that wasn’t enough to tickle your funnybone, he’s obsessed with maps and geography. He drove from England to Mongolia in a tiny car painted like a Rubik’s Cube for charity and plays difficult songs on piano. He speaks Italian, Spanish, and morse code, can write in Russian, Georgian, Hebrew, Arabic and Hindi.

He’s never learned how to type with more than two fingers and as a result, he types 110 WPM with two fingers. He ran the Boston Marathon without training and lives in New York City, in a buzzer-less building in Little Italy, where he lowers his key down to visitors from a fishing pole. He has ONE phone and he maintains he’s never upgrading. Ever.”
