Dr. Brian Goldman: Doctor’s Make Mistakes
Every doctor makes mistakes. But, says physician Brian Goldman, medicine’s culture of denial (and shame) keeps Doctors from ever talking about those mistakes, or using them to learn and improve. Telling stories from his own long practice, he calls on Doctors to start talking about being wrong.
ABOUT Tedx
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. The programme is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
ABOUT Dr. Brian Goldman
“Dr Brian Goldman has been a highly regarded Emergency physician at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital for over 20 years, he’s also transformed his medical expertise into an award-winning career in medical journalism.
He challenges our view of Doctors and healthcare and is one of those rare individuals with great success in more than one high-pressure field. Doctors make mistakes: Can we talk about that?
Using one of his own medical mistakes, he digs down to discover the roots of medicines’ difficulty confronting and dealing with medical errors.
He is also the host of CBC Radio’s White Coat, Black Art. The Show examines the business and culture of medicine from an insider’s perspective. Its name is a reference to the white coats that Doctors wear, and to the sometimes unquantifiable but always potent black art of healing. Never one to shy away from controversy, Dr Goldman specialises in kicking open the doors to the medical establishment, revealing what really goes on behind the scenes – and in the minds of Doctors and Nurses.
In Dr. Goldman’s first book, ‘The Night Shift’ published in 2010, he shares his experiences of working through the witching hours at Mount Sinai, as well as at the other hospitals where he has spent his long career.”
