MOBO award-winning hip hop artist ‘Akala’ is a Label owner and social entrepreneur who fuses rap/rock/electro-punk with fierce lyrical storytelling (think Wu-Tang Clan and Aphex Twin meets Rage Against The Machine).  He demonstrates and explores the connections between Shakespeare and Hip-Hop, and the wider cultural debate around language and it’s power.

ABOUT Tedx

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. The programme is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

ABOUT Akala

“Emerging from London’s hip-hop underground, in 2006 Kingslee ‘Akala’ Daley won the MOBO Best Hip-Hop Award for his debut album ‘It’s Not A Rumour’. Since then he has released his second album ‘Freedom Lasso’ and toured extensively in the UK and around the world.

Since 2008,  he has been touring and promoting the ‘Hip-hop Shakespeare’ lyric-writing and performance workshops across the UK. The Hip-hop Shakespeare Company (‘THSC’) is a music theatre production company aimed at exploring the social, cultural and linguistic parallels between the works of William Shakespeare and that of modern day rappers.

Launched in 2009 with a guest appearance by British actor Sir Ian McKellen, THSC delivers Bespoke Education Programmes offering young people a different view of the arts and ultimately, themselves. THSC also produces interactive live music events/theatre productions showcasing the work of up and coming young talent who share the stage with established artists and actors.

That same year, THSC received a London 2012 Olympic ‘Inspire Mark’, that coincided with the first ‘Hip Hop Shakespeare Live’ show in the Cultural Olympiad’s Open Weekend, attracting crowds of hundreds of people spanning all ages and cultural background. Last year saw the launch of ‘Illa State Productions’ to combine Akala’s budding scriptwriting talent alongside TV presenting and as a music composer for various TV and Film projects.”
