Chris Bliss: Comedy is Translation
Writer Chris Bliss explores the inherent challenge of communication, and how comedy opens paths to new perspectives. Every act of communication is, in some way, an act of translation. He thinks hard about the way that great comedy can translate deep truths for a mass audience. He explores the inherent challenge of communication, and how comedy opens paths to new perspectives.
ABOUT Tedx
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. The programme is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
ABOUT Chris Bliss
“Chris Bliss is a national headline comedian, with credits including the Tonight Show and the Late Show with David Letterman, as well as being an internationally renowned variety artist, opening for superstars from Eric Clapton to Michael Jackson.
In 2005, he founded MyBillofRights.org, with the mission of creating monuments and permanent displays of the Bill of Rights in civic spaces across America. The organisation expects to dedicate America’s first monument celebrating the Bill of Rights at the Arizona Capitol Mall, in December 2012.
Chris says, “Everywhere I go in America these days, the people I talk with have two things in common: a profound love for our country, and an equally profound concern that we have lost our way. As we face the most daunting challenges in generations, more and more Americans are seeking out common ground, and turning away from the divisiveness and polarisation that have characterised our national conversation for too many years.
It is this heartfelt longing to rebuild that conversation on a foundation of mutual respect and shared purpose that is the inspiration behind MyBillofRights.org.”
