ABOUT Matthew Spitzer
“Dr. Matthew Spitzer joined MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières) in 1999. MSF is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural or man-made disasters.
On joining MSF they established primary care services and training medical providers in Khampa Tibet, southwestern China. He has worked in Sierra Leone as field co-ordinator, with MSF-USA in a project exploring the medical needs of asylum seekers in detention, and in Cambodia, where he co-ordinated response to epidemic dengue.
Elected to the Board of Directors of MSF-USA in 2006, he chaired the Programme Committee and was elected President in 2008. A family physician, Dr. Spitzer worked for 10 years in San Francisco at the St. Anthony Free Clinic and its affiliated drug rehabilitation programme, practiced for a year and a half at San Quentin State Prison, and taught in the case-based curriculum of UC Berkeley’s Joint Medical Programme.
Now based in NYC, he is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and the Director of Pre-Doctoral Education at Columbia University’s Center for Family and Community Medicine.”
