Chris Garner: Transforming the Teacher in Indigenous Education
Looking back to the 1950’s and 1970’s in remote schooling, teacher Chris Garner challenges the way we view success in Indigenous Education, making a powerful case for the role of the educator to evolve, bringing success for students and, ultimately, Aboriginal people’s desired outcomes.

ABOUT Chris Garner
“Chris Garner was born in Scotland and has since lived in England, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. The move to South Africa opened his world up to a sense of justice and the importance of multi-culturalism; so it makes sense that his love for working with Aboriginal people began in 1992 when he heard of the Mabo case in Australia.
This began a 12 year journey to discover the culture and change countries, in which time he worked as a Youth Worker and Graphic Designer as well as studying Education. Chris moved to Darwin and travels into Arnhemland since 2005 have been a dream come true for him.
He met his wife in a homeland school on Elcho Island and they have settled happily in Karama with their two dogs. He has been working in Indigenous Education since arriving in the Top End, completing a Teaching Double Degree and finding his place in Senior School Indigenous Support.
His love for the Top End extends beyond tropical weather, AFL and Laksa at Parap Markets, he has made this place his home and forged some profound relationships with Indigenous families across the region. He truly is living the dream!”
