Sally Richards: Creating A Meaningful Life for Jackson
As the mother of four boys, you’d think Sally Richards has enough on her hands. But one of those boys, Jackson, is disabled, and needs full time support. Sally chose to create what she calls ‘a meaningful life’ for Jackson. This is her (and Jackson’s) story.
ABOUT TEDx
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. The programme is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
ABOUT Sally Richards
“Sally Richards is the mother of Tim, Duncan Jackson and Lewis. Currently she teaches ESL two days a week at the Canberra Institute of Technology. Sally has presented at National (Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne) and International conferences in Ottawa and Hawaii.
She has organised and presented at forums, workshops and seminars in Perth, Brisbane, Albury, Ballarat, Sydney, Nowra, Canberra and others. She has, among other things, a Bachelor of Education, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and has completed Professional Writing (Editing) at the University of Canberra.
Sally is a fierce supporter of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and thinks that all people have a right to sexual expression regardless of their abilities or disabilities. Her lead editorial in The Canberra Times (24 June 2011) is an example of her advocacy work.
She continues to advocate on behalf of her son Jackson but has broadened her activities to include many other areas including volunteering on the Sydney Mardi Gras parade, organising a screening of the documentary ‘Scarlet Road’, joining the ACT chapter of PFLAG (parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and leading a Bollywood flashmob for Harmony Day at the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT), where she also teaches English to adult migrants.”
