Víðir Reynisson: Iceland’s Disaster Response

Víðir Reynisson is head of the National Commission of Icelandic Police, he co-ordinates the country’s response to natural disasters, including the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano and oversees the country’s search and rescue teams. Iceland has developed a nimble crisis management model.

Víðir Reynisson “Viðar Reynisson has a reputable list of work experiences, Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine, including the ALS ambulances in Reykjavik and Oslo and the SAR/HEMS helicopter of the Icelandic Coast Guard. He has specialist training in anaesthesia in Norway, and during 2010-2011 he worked on HEMS units in the UK, including 6 months in London.

He has a MD degree from the University of Iceland and a MBA from University of Reykjavik and did his internship at Landspitalinn (The National Hospital).  Viðar was a Medical Officer with the British Army in a NATO collaborative in Bosnia for 6 months in 1998.

He has also been a supervising resident of Reykjavik’s ALS ambulance and flight Physician on ICG SAR/EMS helicopter together with clinical work in internal medicine and emergency medicine. Between 2003-2004 Viðar was a Management Consultant for McKinsey & Co. in Copenhagen.”
