Ryan Merkley: Online video, Annotated, Remixed and Popped
Videos on the web should work like the web itself: be dynamic, full of links, maps and information that can be edited and updated live, says Mozilla Foundation Chief Operating Officer Ryan Merkley.
ABOUT TED
TED is a small Non Profit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment and Design.
ABOUT Ryan Merkley
“Ryan Merkley is the Chief Operating Officer at the Mozilla Foundation, and is dedicated to making the web a more user-friendly place.
A native of Toronto, Canada, Ryan Merkley has devoted his career to “helping users of the web become makers of the web.” He advocates for open data initiatives, especially in regards to the public sector. For over a decade, he has worked in the public sector and with cause-driven organisations to help them level up.
When he was interviewed for his current role as Chief Operating Officer at Mozilla, Mark Surman, the organisation’s Executive Director, asked him to tell him his ‘superpower’. Just one? Superman got a half-dozen.
Then again, Batman didn’t have any powers at all (unless extreme rage or pharaoh-level wealth count as a super-power). His answer? Amplification. The common thread across my career is helping people with the seed of a good idea to amplify it massively and rapidly.
He says, “staying calm in a crisis, offering a dissenting voice in a healthy debate, and always dragging things across the finish line are values he lives by. His not-so-secret ambition is to do voice-over work for films and commercials. Or monster truck rallies!”
